Plaid Coat
In the past, I was never one to purchase fashion coats. Not too sure why but investing in quality coats were far down my shopping list. Maybe it had to do with the price and as well, it can be rather difficult finding the perfect coat to fit a petite body such as myself. Either the length of the sleeve is too long or the shoulder seams doesn’t sit right. The only time I cared to buy a coat is to stay warm for the cold winter months. That all changed maybe 8 years ago. What inspired me to invest in fashionable, staple coats? Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen!!! The Olsen twins are my fashion inspiration! If you do recall the Olsen twins’ fashion, they were the ones that made boho chic or “bag lady” style, trendy. Ashley Olsen’s style was more modern, sophisticated and chic compared to her twin sister, Mary-Kate’s eccentric, vintage and grunge style. I definitely love and vibe more with Mary-Kate’s fashion choices. I think it was in an interview when they said they love buying a good coat because with a nice fitted coat, you will always look stylish and put together. You can be rockin’ a slip dress or pajamas and no one would know what’s hiding underneath a stylish coat.
I took the Olsen twins’ fashion advice and to this day, I have a pretty sick collection of staple coats in my closet to keep me looking very fashionable for all four seasons. Trench coats in beige, olive green and camel for the Spring. Must haves in everyone’s closet (men & women), a black motorcycle jacket and a classic denim jacket for the Summer. For the Fall, my favorite Zara leopard fur coat and my newest edition, my oversize plaid coat for the Winter.
This season you see a great presence of plaid prints from wool coats, blazers, skirts and trousers in fashion retail stores such as Aritzia, H&M, and Zara. I do love a good plaid print incorporated in a look! A beautiful white silk blouse paired with a high waisted wide-leg plaid trouser and a pointy toe high heel for the office. A look like this definitely gives off a strong, sexy and feminine vibe. If you want to look trendy for the office, I would wear a plaid fitted blazer, black turtle-neck with a matching mini skirt. I believe a good oversize plaid coat such as the one I purchased from Zara is a great staple coat to have! It’s versatility allows you to look polish and sophisticated and also, it can be worn with a casual look by rocking it with a casual tee, great pair of denim jeans and fashion sneakers. If you’re intimidated with the print in itself, why not incorporate the print by accessorizing your look with a plaid blanket scarf or a plaid printed newsboy cap. Remember, when incorporating any print to your look, the focal point should be the print and everything else worn with it should be subtle.
